 When Counseling is Needed

One of the aspects that I love about the field of Counseling is that it is founded on principle of optimal wellness. One does not have to have mental health issues to benefit from counseling. Counseling can improve everyday life.

However, there are some issues that require the specialized knowledge of a mental health professional.

Situations that Require Counseling
Or for which Counseling Significantly Improves Healing
Trauma : Life Threatening or Life Altering Event, including Physical or Sexual Assault and Chronic Verbal Abuse
Grief: Death or Termination of a Valued Relationship
Divorce
Major Life Transitions
Care Giving to Critically Ill
Career Development
Chronic Relationship Problems

Signs that Counseling is Needed
"Stuckness"
Avoidance of activities, situations, or things that remind you of a traumatic event
Problems with Negative Self-Talk
Isolating from others
Depression (loss of interest or pleasure in normal activities)
Missing extra days at work or school
Neglecting Responsibilities
Sudden Outbursts of Anger
Low Self-Esteem
Attention or Memory Problems, Forgetfulness, Brain Fog, Poor Concentration
Alcohol or other Substance Abuse
Crying Jags
Chronic Fatigue or Low Energy
Irritability or Restlessness
Suicidal Thoughts or Feelings
Thoughts of Harming Others
Abnormal Eat or Exercise Behavior
Flashbacks (intrusive memories)
Hallucinations
Dissociation (like losing unaccountable tracts of time, trance, spontaneous age regression, out-of-body sensation, psychogenic seizures, multiple personalities)
Fears  that interfer with normal functioning
Panic Attacks
Feeling of Unreality or Disorientation
Frequently Stressed Out  or Burn Out
Abrupt or Radical Changes in Behavior
Insomnia
Problems with Irrational, Illogical or Delusional Thinking
Alternating periods of Feeling High or Euphoric and Feeling Depressed
Head injury, even if you don't become unconscious

Some of the above problems may also indicate a Medical problem: Concentration problems or fatigue are examples. There are conditions you might not suspect of having a medical link, like depression and anxiety, which can sometimes be related to physical health condition. Other problems, like substance abuse and eating disorders, create medical conditions, which require the attention of a medical practitioner specializing in that field. Physical and mental health are closely connected. It is wise to get both a mental health and a medical health check-up. Brain scans can be very important diagnostic tools. Also, the above list is by no means a complete list of mental health issues, so if you are concerned call a professional.
